For are induction project we were required to plan and create a short corporate video for the ACSE awards in 5 weeks. We were expected to research and justify all are decisions we made as well as create a professional looking corporate video. The project involved us working in groups of 7-8 people we didn't know and coordinating ourselves on site, as well as researching and planning are questions for are interviewee, setting up and filming are own interviews and cutaways, planning and creating our own edit with little to no instruction as well as find and add our own music under the stress of a very short time span without any intrusion from the client or are tutors.
For print I analyzed typography to find a suitable san-serif font to use on the transparent overlays like on the news or on any professional documentary. The purpose of the overlay is to enhance the presence of the text without overpowering the reader as well as researching how to place the overlay banner in a suitable location on the screen without making it unreadable or overbearing. We also made splash screen for the video to create a short but eyes catching credit sequence, crediting us as the creators for the product.
We learned about minimising the amount of information on the page/screen (especially when the text is moving) by designing a bus side advertisement. From this I learned the importance of simplifying my text as well as a practical use of typography.like using san serif font becouse they’re clearer and easier to read on passing.
When we went to film at Brewers we didn't get a chance to plan or discuss what kind of cut aways we’d film we decided to work around the problem by splitting into 3 groups and covering different areas at a time each group was given a part of the building (show room, store floor and backroom shiping area) each group was told to film as many shots as they could and to film anything we felt would come in handy, we were required to ask any customer or employee who we got on film for permission to use them in are video and we were faced with the problem of not being allowed to use bit of footage because we couldn't get the customer's permission, we in the end decided it be best just to refilm the shot without the customers in shot.
We faced a problem with the first interviewee, he had prepared a script and was unprepared for are questions and didn't give off a natural flow to his answers we were able to use a couple of clips from the the footage however a lot of the interview was repetitive. However everything in the film process went well we set up our equipment properly as well as recorded clear sound.
When we started the editing process we split up into two groups to create to different edits. I found that my weakness was my ability to communicate, I had trouble communicating ideas with my team, explaining what I was doing or going to do as well as communicate to my team what I need them to do or why, because of this I ended up take control of the editing and ended up excluding the rest of my team. My team faced are first problem when we tried moving are edit to the other groups computer to try and combine are edits, because the other group had renames the source file and were working out of the server we ended up having to give up on are version of the edit and work off the other groups version.
In our team are rolls were divided to increase the productability of the team and to stop are team members for feeling they had nothing to do, so we divided the roll as so.
Me- I was the main editor i made sure everything was put together properly on the timeline and made the first layout of the edit that the other work off i also acted as the group lead by assigning the different jobs to everyone.
Matt- Matt was the second editor and also helped me make decisions of the edit as well as looked over my work to see if I made any mistake I couldn't see.
Inees- He was put in charge of researching, finding, and deciding the final song we'd use.
joerden - Added the effects as well as synced the sound and footage together.
Are teams use of time was well used I felt we got alot done in the time we had only having to stay behind once or twice for half an hour to get parts of the video done , however we did not come in outside of are lesson plans because of this there were a couple for things we didn't get the chance to fix however I'm still very happy with the final product.
We tried to convey the message of what brewers is and what they stand for thought imagery and sound. Using music that gave a homely, cheerful atmosphere which added to the effect of using footage of bright rooms and smiling employees working with customers creates this feeling of an inviting and positive business. Are client at brewers wanted us to convey that brewers was a sussex born business that continues to grow but hasn't forgotten their roots.and work hard to give back to the community.
Our choice of music was heavily inspired by the imagery we film at brewers. The showroom which we use in the first scene for the video was bright and inviting and gave a homely feel and we wanted to have the music convey this thought out the video we looked though the song of premier sound and choice 10 song we liked then voted of the best 3 and put them in are video to see which matched the best.
Are peer feedback showed that we managed to get are intended message across, feedback like “gave off a friendly impression” and “It was clean and interesting. colorful as well, which caught my eye” and showed that the only areas to improve are technical aspects like “Matchup Cutaway footage to what interviewer is saying” or “noticed a couple of jump cuts but didn't take away from the overall experience”
My experience with the project was very fun and productive I developed a better understanding of typography and design layout as well as further developed my communication skills like working with people I'm not familiar with and trying to work around everyone's skills sets and coordinate a group. I've also gained a better understand of the premier pro software and the different effects and the different uses of each of them for example me and my group tried using a fade to white effect which ended up making are work look choppy and did give a natural fade effect we were looking for after replacing the effect with the dissolve effect which allowed the footage to disappear over the next clip.
The challenges we face because of the short nature of the deadline were are in ability to be able to plan because this we faced a lot of problems like not being able to visit the filming site in advance meaning we couldn't plan for any shots we wanted to get and simply had to get as many as we could while we were there, another example for problems we face because of our limited time was very stressful atmosphere because we believed we were running out of time we rushed to finish are work then at the last minute tried going back to fix the mistake we made along the way.
While on site when filming I felt it was useful to have a large group because the more people on site the more ideas for good shots we'd get , however when we got back and started the editing phase it felt like there were way too many people standing around not doing anything and made it hard to try and split work around evenly.
The main problem we face was sound synching both camerons with the audio from the boom mic, we managed to overcome the problem by getting help from a tutor when trying to fix it myself it became very stressful over then this I don't feel I faced many problem especially from my team who were very cooperative. The subject of the video was very interesting which made it hard to feel passionate about it however the longer I worked on the video the more I wanted it to be better and to continue to improve it.
For our primary research we watched last year's videos so we could get a better idea for the standard of work we were expected to work to as well as see the type of videos we’d be making, we interview also interviewed multiply spokesmen from brewers for the video as well as spent a full lesson learning about how to use all the equipment and editing softwares we’d be using throughout the project this helped us to gain a practical understanding of the equipment and the different roles involved in the filming process.
For our secondary research we compiled information on the different businesses we’d be working with by researching them online through their websites and anyother information we could use and source this gave us a better understanding of the business and directly impacted are interview questions we also needed to researched the location we’d be work at by looking at the location and its surroundings before we left to shoot their this was used to inform our team on where we’d be going also a member of our filming team looked into our transport to the location from the campus.
